Taylor Russell McKenzie was conceived in Vancouver, British Columbia on July 18, 1994. She was also raised in Toronto, Vancouver, and Montreal. Russell was the daughter of a black dad and a white mom. She grew up mostly with her mom's family. Her skin color made her feel unaccepted when she was a teenager. Their family was struggling financially. They were constantly on the move and relocated 16 times in an attempt to assist her father's career. However, despite this hardship, Russell mentioned how in her younger days "there always was a chance for re-invention, to make something new."As as a young person, Russell was already artistically at first. she was interested in pursuing a career in ballet, and later be a painter. When she was 18, she began her first class in acting. She used her savings from work to purchase a car and then drove to Los Angeles, to audition. She would go back to work after her funds ran out and then resume the audition process. This routine was followed for four more years until she received her first TV part.
